when covid comes calling
By Gerri Barr
Ann Arbor, Michigan, is a vibrant college town of 121,000, which swells during the academic year with the addition of 46,000 University of Michigan students. Unlike many campuses, UM is not contained in a single area so the mixture of students and townies occurs throughout the city. As does housing, retail, office facilities, restaurants and over 500 university buildings. Bustling.
As with most of the world, however, Ann Arbor came to a standstill in mid-March 2020 as the COVID 19 virus rapidly spread throughout the US and all countries. Streets were emptied of cars and people almost overnight. Most businesses closed, leaving 10’s of thousands working from home, or sadly, without employment. These are a few of the images I captured during several town walk abouts in March & April 2020.
